Invisalign – Veneers – Braces – Bonding
Many people live with spaces in between their teeth that they would dearly love to have closed. They know removing the gaps would dramatically improve their smile but their fear of, or, hatred of metal braces has put them off attending to this issue.
But in cosmetic dentistry we have quite a few options for patients with different needs and in this article, I will outline the four major options for dealing with gap teeth.
Before I go on, articles are by necessity, very general in nature but you are welcome to book a free consultation with Dr. Lee or Dr. Murad at Smile Makeover Expert Glebe, where we will assess your teeth and detail your individual options to help you work out the best one to choose.
The Smile Makeover Experts team is part of Glebe Dental Group, a long established and well respected dental clinic which specialises in cosmetic dentistry.
Ok, so below are 4 ways that we are able to close the gaps in your teeth:
Bonding is what we call the process where we use a composite resin material to fill in the gaps. The resin is applied between the teeth to fill the space between them. This works extremely well when the space between the teeth is fairly small.
In cases where Bonding can be used, we don’t even need to use an anaesthetic, so no injections, because there is no pain with this process at all.
While the composite resin used in bonding can be matched to the shade of your teeth, it is more susceptible to staining than your actual teeth and porcelain crowns.
Dr. Lee and Dr. Murad simply roughen the tooth surface a little to prepare the area for the adhesion of the bonding material and within an hour or two, depending on the number of gaps that need to be filled, you are done and ready to go.
What Does Teeth Bonding Look Like When Completed
When bonding is done correctly by a cosmetic dentist as experienced as our team, this technique looks very natural and is long-lasting. Dr. Lee and Dr. Murad pay close attention to detail and their knowledge of and experience with bonding materials and their skill, some people call it, artistry, gives you an excellent result. You will be happy to smile all day, every day.
It does feel different for a couple of days as you are probably used to feeling those gaps with your tongue. After a few days you will not notice the feel but you will surely, notice the difference when you smile.
What if My Gaps are too Large for Bonding?
If the space between your teeth is too large to use bonding to fill the gaps, we will let you know. If bonding is used to fill spaces that are too large then the teeth will look fake and unnatural.
If this is the situation in your case don’t worry, because our expert dentist will let you know what the other options available are and will help you choose the best treatment for closing the gap between your teeth.

Veneers (Often Called Porcelain Veneers)
Veneers are another excellent option for closing the gaps between your teeth and have a number of advantages which is why many clients choose this option.
Veneers are made of porcelain which lasts longer than the resin used in bonding because it is a more robust and durable material.
Veneers will not chip or stain and look very natural when done by a cosmetic dentist.
Another pleasing feature of veneers is the fact that they will not discolour with time. With just two, or sometimes, three visits your gaps will be gone leaving you with a smile that lights up the room.
How Long do Veneers Last?
Finally, because veneers (often referred to as porcelain veneers) last for a long time, on average up to 10 years, you get a great return for your investment. And as dental porcelain technology improves, the lifespan of porcelain veneers will also improve.
Porcelain veneers are a more expensive treatment than bonding, but in many cases, they are the better way to go.
Our expert dentist will study your smile and advise you if this is the best option.
If veneers are the best option for you then you are in great hands in our office. You will be happy to know, our expert team have all completed hundreds of hours of continuing education specifically geared towards porcelain veneers and creating smile makeovers and they have many years of experience in fitting them.

If you are looking for a more natural option to close the gaps between your teeth, one that is less invasive than Veneers but requires more patience before you see the result, then Invisalign may be your choice.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign works like braces but is more aesthetically pleasing because it is almost invisible. It uses clear plastic trays that fit over the teeth and are designed to move the teeth just like braces but it has the advantage that it is more comfortable to wear and they are almost invisible to others. Often people cannot even tell that you are wearing anything.
The trays physically move the teeth over time so you need to consider that this treatment takes longer than veneers and bonding, usually around 10 months but it can be shorter or longer depending on the task to be done.
Another benefit is that nothing artificial is placed over the top of your teeth (like a cap or Veneers) so the teeth are not prepared at all. Your smile will be “au naturel” (French for in the natural state).

Traditional braces are another option you can use to close spaces between your teeth.
These days there are newer ceramic braces available which are more aesthetic looking than the older metal braces and there are many new techniques that can help speed up the treatment time, sometimes dramatically! In fact, treatment can sometimes be completed in as little as 4 to 5 months.
Braces and Invisalign Aftercare
After using either Invisalign or braces it is extremely important to wear your retainers until we tell you it’s ok to stop because teeth have a memory and they want to go back to where they were originally positioned. We frequently recommend fixed retainers which remain in place permanently. If you have questions about retainer therapy or need new retainers let us know.
